PODER provides educational support for San Marcos youth
SAN MARCOS, Texas, April 18, 2012—PODER offers after school
care for the youth of the community at no cost.
PODER is a community center for San
Marcos Housing Authority, which provide tutors and mentors to local youths.
Students go to PODER after school to get homework assistance and a meal.
PODER teaches the youth of San
Marcos essential skills such as conflict resolution, goal setting and personal
responsibility. PODER strives to provide education and stress the importance of
community involvement.
“Students are excited to come to
PODER because the kids know each other and they like playing on the Wii or
using the computer lab,” said Maria Calcaban, Resident Service Coordinator. “Most
of the students like the game room with a pool table, and the recording studio
complete with instruments.”
PODER is a non-profit that relies
on volunteers. The volunteers help the students with homework and create
special projects. The volunteers also accompany the students to one of the
three on-site playgrounds.
“We are always looking for
volunteers, and we usually get some volunteers from Texas State’s social work
program,” said Calcaban. “The challenge is getting volunteers for the summer
since most students at Texas State don’t live in San Marcos.”
PODER is available to the San
Marcos community, and is currently looking for more students for the summer
program. PODER post new PODER is locally and federally funded.
PODER started in 1988 as The Kids Against Drugs
Program. Children came to PODER to find a place where they could do their
homework, talk with friends, play games, and find a smiling face to welcome
them.
